Sharing special moments...
CAREWAYS is, like its name suggests, a caring organization that reaches out to the Intellectually Impaired Adult. The goal is to:
- Provide day care centers where those attending are involved in a variety of activities / outings;
- Provide a service to families of those persons who have intellectual disabilities;
- Provide life long care in residential facilities (long term plans).
These objectives are pursued within an environment underpinned by Christian faith and values.
There are two facilities available at the moment: a day workshop at the Methodist Church in Kloof and a workshop once a week at the Siyanakekela Centre at the KwaNdengezi Methodist Church.
CAREWAYS is a registered Non-Profit Organization; number NPO 011-138. PBO 130001357.

Working together, to make a difference...
A Special Way of Caring - CAREWAYS - Helping Intellectually Impaired Adults
Intellectually Impaired Adults require protected employment and especially in today’s economic climate, there are very few opportunities available. The CAREWAYS centers provide an environment where these individuals can feel proud of who they are and what they can do.
In our clamorous society where groups and individuals representing almost every cause shout out their demands and rights, there is a group so marginalized and isolated, their voices are rarely, if ever, heard. Poorly represented, largely unknown, few in numbers, it is a powerless, truly disadvantaged, and largely forgotten set.
In South Africa, they’re referred to as Mentally Handicapped or Mentally Disabled. The British have a less stigmatized term – People with a Learning Disability – and in that country and other Western nations, members of the group are accorded respect, assistance, protection, choices and opportunities the likes of which their peers in South Africa could never even dream of. And for their parents, two perpetual questions hover like a doubled-edged sword:
- How can I give my child a richer, more stimulating life?
- What is going to happen to him/her when I pass?
To both questions there are no easy or comforting answers.
Those who do campaign on behalf of the mentally disabled in South Africa usually find themselves up against more popular or glamorous causes. And yet this is a group that asks for so little – for instance to be recognized and respected, included, given reachable goals that make a person feel able and not found wanting, to be given choices.
And then there are simple material needs such as those listed below that would make the world of difference for both the clients and their care givers at our workshops in Kloof and KwaNdengezi:
- A vehicle to transport Members – 15 or more seater vehicle
- Funding for a full time staff member at KwaNdengezi.
- Funding for a residential care facility for our Members.
- Craft materials for both centers – listed on our flyer
If you are able to help us with any of the above, or in any other way, we would be enormously grateful. And you would be contributing immeasurably toward improving the lives of a very needy group.
As we are a registered NPO and PBO, a Section 18A tax certificate will be issued for all donations, which enables you to submit the donation to SARS for a tax deduction.

"Intellectually Impaired People are one of the most oppressed minorities in all places"
How you can help?
- Volunteer – we can always use more assistance. Ladies who can come teach sewing, men to teach woodwork etc.
- Donate craft materials – we need all kinds of craft material, in wood or ceramics, wool, fabric, tapestry cotton, paint, beads, paper, mosaic tiles etc.
- Donate educational materials – board games, puzzles and books are always welcome.
- A 16 seater vehicle is needed to transport the adults to KwaNdengezi workshop and on fun outings.
- Make a cash donation (CAREWAYS is able to issue a Section 18A certificate to donors so that their donations are tax-deductible)-
- Name of Account: CAREWAYS
- Bank: First National Bank
- Branch: Kloof
- Branch Code: 221526
- Account Number: 62164913462
- Ref: WEB donation
- We need Occupational Therapists – funds will be used to employ an occupational therapist at both centers.
- We need to open the Siyanakekela Centre more frequently – a further use of donated funds is to allow CAREWAYS to employ a paid person so that this centre can open more frequently.
- We want to provide accommodation for the youngsters in a “home-away-from-home” residential care facility – we need around R5 million to get this off the ground.
- Visit and support our craft market – CAREWAYS holds an annual Craft Market in November/December each year where the crafts from the Kloof workshop are on sale. The craft include ceramics, beadwork, mosaic work and fabric painting.
- An annual golf day and second chances sale is held where your support will be welcomed.
We’d like to thank all our supporters for the support that’s been received.

The focus of the workshop is on the intimacy and individual attention afforded by small group interaction. The emphasis is on crafts and other stimulating activities. There is also ongoing training in life skills, education and social skills. Families contribute financially towards the cost of salaries and other running costs.
A variety of arts and crafts are taught. The craft activities include mosaic work, pottery, sewing skills, decoupage, ceramic painting, fabric painting, bead work, box and card making.
Crafts are sold at the Workshop’s Annual Market Day, and at venues such as The Shongweni Farmers Market where we are able to show-case the Careways projects and create awareness about our Workshops.
Members of the Workshop also enjoy and outing at least once a term and an annual camp is held to encourage Members to be “self-sufficient” away from parents…the growth in some children have been phenomenal.
Working throughout the year to prepare for our annual arts & craft market!

The emphasis at this centre is on encouraging self esteem, finding a place in the community, learning basic skills and exposure to stimulating activities. Those attending are involved in a variety of activities to improve their perceptual and other skills. The folk are supplied with a meal each week.
The centre is run by volunteers, some who have been there since the inception of the centre, and Nomfusi, who has a heart of gold and is the current centre Manageress.
This Centre is only open once a week at the moment, but will be open more frequently once funds become available.
Any donations towards full time staff members and daily transport costs will be greatly appreciated, as this will enable us to open the centre more frequently, giving our Members the attention and skills they need to flourish in society.
A year-end party is held for all Staff and Members, with a surprise visit by Santa.
The Members also participate in the annual Buddy walk, organized by the Down Syndrome Society of Durban, and outings during the year if possible.
